Wednesday, 7 December 2022
10:30 - 12:00

Classroom 203

Abstract:
As polled, over 60% of users in the US are very concerned about what is real and what is fake on the Internet. Harms to individuals and society from information manipulation and disinformation, including adverse effects on safety, health, autonomy, democratic elections, rule of law, as well as financial harms, extreme polarization, and escalation from online content to offline violence have been pointed out and denounced by concerned individuals, by the civil society, by the federal and state governments, and by Congress alike. What is the way forward and what is the role for research? Representatives from the US Government research funding agencies will discuss the key challenges and strategies for future research.

Moderator: Tomas Vagoun, NITRD

Panelists:
Dan Cosley, Program Director, National Science Foundation
Brian Kettler, Program Manager, DARPA
Jacob Shapiro, Special Advisor, Office of the Director of National Intelligence; Professor of Politics and International Affairs, Princeton University
